  • Praying for God's Presence

Our yearning for God's encircling presence is expressed uniquely in the traditional Lorica prayers of protection. The most famous of these prayers, St. Patrick's Breastplate, invokes all of God's gifts to accompany us on our journey.

Christ beside me, Christ before me
Christ behind me, Christ within me
Christ beneath me, Christ above me
    Christ within me.

    Questions of Faith and Doubt

What if I don't know how to pray?

An amazing thing about prayer is that our capacity for intimacy with God is also our capacity to be close to ourselves and others. It's all connected.

    Lose Yourself in God
    Person in front of waterfall

When we lose ourselves in God, we are unfastened from unhealthy dependence on those we love, we are unfastened from the greed and selfishness we can easily exhibit toward others, we are unfastened from destructive patterns of anger and resentment, we are unfastened from love that is really not love at all.

When we lose ourselves in God, we are no longer compelled to choose less than the best in our relationships. We are freed to include others, love others, extend welcome to others, and share with others in a way that is un-self-conscious.

When we are grasped by God and lose ourselves in the presence of that God, we are unfastened from the thinking and living that keeps us small in the midst of a life that is bigger than we can even begin to imagine.

    Opening Your Eyes
Jewish spirituality is a matter of seeing the holy in the everyday, and invites us to wake up and open our eyes to the holy things happening all around us every day.

When we wake up and see the morning light, that's a spiritual moment according to Judaism. When we taste food and are nourished. When we learn from others and grow wise. When we embrace people we love and receive their love in return. When we help those around us and feel good.

All these and more are there for us every day, but you have to open your eyes to see them. Otherwise, you miss it.

Teresa: Come Be My Light Mother Teresa:
    Come Be My Light

We want to know what her "darkness" was all about, and how someone who for years on end said to her confessors that she did not feel God's presence, and even doubted that God loved her, could do what she did with her life day after day. How is that possible?!
