A Prayer for Stillness |
|
Gracious God, I ask you to plant a seed of
stillness in my soul. Everything in my life
moves ever more quickly, and I am continually
expected to fit more things into time that is
already brimful with activity.

Questions of Faith and Doubt |
|
What is
holiness?
Holiness is a complex concept. It refers to
the essence of God's being, not so much a
single attribute but perhaps the sum of all
attributes.

Strength to Serve |
|
Though I had been brought up to say my
prayers to God, the Divine Other…to
"lift up" my prayers, as if to some far off
heavenly
realm, St. Teresa spoke of God in ways that
exploded those concepts. She talked of
relationship, connection, communion—a
constant interplay between doctrine and
experience.
The fruit of this mystical connection is the
strength to live in service to God and neighbor.

Free to Serve
Christian hope is not only the conviction
that we belong to God but also the motivation
for all our work and witness. Martin Luther
declared, "Everything that is done in the
world is done by hope." When we belong to
God, we are free from ourselves and liberated
to serve others.

by Hope
by Dr. John M. Mulder
Our sleep, by wonder's joy, is cracked.
We wake from apathy.
Our souls surprised find what they lacked
One moment sets us free.

Transformed for the World
One of the hallmarks of the Christian
tradition is the notion that we are
transformed for the sake of the
world—it's a sacred, cyclical process.
Service to others is part of the journey,
too.
Hopefully, what happens is that our inner
work re-energizes us for living and serving
in the day-to-day world with integrity and
pure motives. There's a balanced ebb and
flow—inner to outer—which was
certainly modeled in the life of Jesus.
