Prayer for Freedom |
|
O God, give me the wisdom to see
the subtle ways people can be enslaved and the
courage to speak for those who have no voice. I ask
this for the sake of your love.

Questions of Faith and Doubt |

What if I
strongly disagree with the views of someone
who professes to be a Christian?
It is how we handle disagreements that makes all the
difference. As in a healthy family relationship, so long
as we respect the person(s) with whom we disagree,
so long as we accord them the privilege of holding
their own views, we may disagree productively.

In-Dependence |
|
When we think of independence in terms of our
country or in terms of our own personal lives, or in
terms of our relationships, we need to ask, "What are
we seeking independence from and what are we
seeking independence for?"
I believe we're seeking independence not for the
reality of personal freedom alone, but for the reality of
being in relationship. The
reality is that we are in-dependence
with one
another, with the earth, and with God. We
do not live isolated and alone.

The Yoke of Freedom
Whomever or whatever we serve, we come under
their yoke. Jesus calls us to take his yoke upon us.
That sounds rough. It sounds like we are to be
weighted down and yoked in.
But the fact is, we have so many choices and
temptations in this life, that if we wish to be on God's
side, if we wish to be a force for good and goodness,
for compassion, love and mercy, we will find freedom
to grow and to be, under the yoke of Jesus.

Fully Human, Fully Free
To express our opinions, to stand up for what we
believe, to act upon what we feel is a fundamental
right and in a large sense a necessary part of being
fully human. What a person thinks and feels matters.
But more important than
freedom of expression is the realization that our view
is always limited. As
hard as we try we can never
achieve a monopoly on Truth.
