    Questions of Faith and Doubt

How can the God of judgment and punishment, as often portrayed in the Old Testament, be reconciled with the concept of a God of love?

The trajectory of scripture reveals an evolving sense of who God is, how God works, what God hopes for us, and how God responds to our shortcomings.

Born Again and Again: Surprising Gifts of a
Fundamentalist ChildhoodBorn Again and Again: Surprising Gifts of a Fundamentalist Childhood
    by Jon M. Sweeney

I found myself in an unusual predicament, as I struggled with feelings of wanting to step outside of all that I knew. I knew that where I was, and who I was trying to be, somehow was not my identity. The faith of my fathers no longer felt like it fit.

    God's Beloved Family
    group of people in huddle

God is most like the very best that an earthly father can possibly be, whether or not we happened to be blessed with that particular father within our own nuclear family.

Fatherhood and family implies at least the possibility of siblings-sisters and brothers who are equally beloved and precious in God's eyes—so that, while our relationship to God can be personal, it can never be private. We are our brother's keeper if we really understand all persons to be members, along with us, of God's family.

To acknowledge God as "Our Father" is to accept God's love for ourselves, but just as importantly, to accept the responsibility to be a sister or brother to every other human being.

    Where You Belong
This sense of belonging collectively to a people modeled for me what it means to be in a community as one of God's—for who I am, who I belong to, calls forth a connection and recognition of a whole community and history of a people. The whole village was responsible for my raising because of a mandate from deep within the history that we are called forth by and to the Creator.

    Going into the World
…the call to discipleship is another kind of call. It has always been a call to move out into the world whose streets our Lord walked, to engage the world, to love it, to work for its betterment and never to count the costs. Jesus' words offer an important reminder that the family of God is larger than our own family, that all people are God's children, and therefore worthy of our own concern.
