Soul Friends |
|
In the Celtic tradition, it is understood that a soul friend is a
spiritual necessity. Every person needs someone with
whom to be completely undefended, to be vulnerable and
honest. A soul friend is the person whose presence allows
us to be real and transparent, to seek continual
transformation and growth in faith, hope and love.

Questions of Faith and Doubt |
|
Is it necessary to be a
part of a religious community in order to fully experience a
relationship with God?
I believe our human relationships, when healthy, are
designed to be a means of experiencing God.

Hearing God's Voice |

Listening to Your Life
In a way, Lent seems to sneak up on us and then to
pounce when itís least expected. And when it comes, it
invites us - not just to the celebration of a single Holy Day,
but into a lengthy discipline of prayer and reflection, giving
us the opportunity to reflect on our lives and to correct the
course they may be taking.
In his book Listening to your Life, Frederick
Buechner has issued that same invitation in this way:
Listen to your life.
See it for the fathomless mystery that it is. In the boredom
and pain of it no less than in the excitement and gladness:
touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of
it because in the last analysis all moments are key
moments, and life itself is grace.
What transforms this listening from self-indulgence into holy
listening is that we do it intentionally in the presence of God,
that we stop, look for God's presence in our lives and listen
for God's voice as it speaks to us in the events and
emotions of our everyday living.

Opening the Heart of Heaven
The prayer that always opens the heart of heaven is the
prayer that is offered without attachment to result. When we
are able to pray without attachment to results, Godís desire
becomes our own, and we are surprised at what
happens—we are given results that we could never
have expected.
O God, give me the soul that longs to be one with you
more than it wants the desires of the heart to be filled.

The Reconciling Faith of St. Patrick
Itís not always easy to explain the mystery of kinship with
saints and soulfriends weíve never met. All I know is that in
spiritual companionship, we have treasures that transcend
time and place.
Today when I stand between two opposing groups and
realize that reconciling love is calling, I remember St.
Patrickís faith. When I step out into unfamiliar territory, I
take with me these encircling words of St. Patrickís
Breastplate:
Christ with me,
Christ before me
Christ behind me
Christ within me.

Saint Patrick: Christ Within Me
