  • Pocket Prayer: For Compassion

Gracious God, when my heart fills with compassion, let me empty it freely and without fear.

    Amen.

    January 15:
Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.

As you have done it for the least of these my children, so you have done it for me.
    ñMatthew 25:40

Though a fallible human being and the subject of controversy throughout his life, and even after his death, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a man of great compassion with a deep concern for justice, much like the great Old Testament prophets. He paid, as some of them did, with his life, but his dedication changed the lives of those to whom he was so devoted.

Which of the religious rules is the most important to follow?

The prophet Micah put it this way: ìWhat does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?î

    Nobody Lives without Fear
    Fear

Nobody lives without fear. No life is fully immune from the variety of fears that afflict and affect us all. Life is too unpredictable to remain stoic in every crisis. At any moment it can take that unexpected turn and leave us high and dry in some undeserved crisis or ill-begotten wilderness. What scares you? Being lost? Being found? Being found out? Leaving home? Staying put? There is no life without fear; no faith, either, for that matter.

Let's turn from the ministry of fear denial, toward discipleship as a way of living with fear and finding ways to deal with it. The scripture not only admonishes the people of God to fear not, it confesses with the Psalmist, "When I am afraid, I will trust in you."

    For the Least of These
For many, many years, I must tell you, I wondered why was I there? Of all the places I could have been, of all the places he could have been, all the things we could have been involved in, why was I there at that moment in history?

And God revealed it to me over the yearsóI was there to be a witness, and my witness has to be true. Martin Luther King, Jr., didnít die in some foolish, untoward way. He didnít overdose. He wasnít shot by a jealous lover. He died helping garbage workers.

The fruits of his labor are with us now. A man with a Ph.D. degreeóof all the things he could have been, he chose to use his gifts and his talents "for the least of these."

In our daily life, we have a tendency to think about the past, to get caught in the sorrow and regret concerning the past, and to get caught in the fear and uncertainty about the future, so our mind is not in the present moment. That is why it is very important to learn how to go back to the present moment in order to become fully alive, fully present. Walking meditation helps us do that easily.
