Slipping Into Mystery
... All of us are going to be bitten--painfully bitten--in this life.
Most of us learn that truth fairly quickly just from experience.
But
... it is not the being bitten that we in this imperfect world can do
anything about;
it is only the how we respond to being bitten that we can
control.
When we look up, usually we are saved by that very act of
faith,
for it is when we look down and struggle with what is
tormenting us that we most often empower it by the very
attention we are giving to it.

Three Simple Sentences about Hope |
|
There are thousands if not millions of people who live in
anxiety about the future of their jobs, the security of their
families, and the prospects of a better life. ...
Now, when I talk about Christian hope, I do not mean
optimism. To be optimistic is to expect certain things to
happen. ...
Instead, Christian hope is based on what we do not see. It
focuses on
the meaning and purpose of life.
Christian hope is what gives us direction. ...
What can that possibly mean? What, after all, is Christian hope?
Let me answer that with three simple sentences:
1.
You are not alone.
2.
You belong to God.
3.
You need not be afraid.
There
are times when the meaning of hope can become crystal clear. ...

I Give Up |
|
A young American was eager to search for the spiritual
truths of the world and had heard of a holy man in the Far
East.
He journeyed there and climbed up the steep mountain to the
cave where the holy man lived. ...
Finally, the holy man came out and sat across from the young
man, looked him straight in the eye, and said, "What is the
most important thing that you can do for God?"
The young man sat there, reflected and thought and thought,
and after a long silence, pondering everything he could think
of, he looked at the holy man and said, "I give up."
The holy man said, "Exactly" and returned to the
cave. ...
